5 Christmas Gift Ideas for Young Naturalists
That is exactly what I did. I asked a young naturalists, Cade, for his top five Christmas gift ideas.
Listen to Cade’s suggestions at Roan Mountain Radio.com episode #047
Here are links to some places where you can buy the suggested gifts:
- Butterfly net at Bass Pro Shops
- Specimen jars at Acorn Naturalists Supplies *
- Orion binoculars
- Field and Forest Handy Book from Amazon
- Multi-tool from Walmart
* More information from Cade: The term “specimen jar” could apply to many different sizes of small glass or plastic containers with tight fitting lids. These can be locally sourced from dime-stores or hobby-stores.
There are more Adventures for you at the 52nd annual Friends of Roan Mountain Fall Naturalists’ Rally – September 5-6-7, 2014.
The spring and fall rallies feature a Friday evening meal and after dinner speaker. Saturday is a full day of hikes, walks, strolls, and other nature study activities. Some are easy, some moderate, some strenuous and some are “kid friendly”.

The Xtreme Roan Adventures was Awesome.
The Free Friday Night Adventures attracted 126 Adventurers. Jeremy Stout, Director of the Nature Center at Steele Creek Park, wowed the crowd with his Skins & Skulls Adventure.
Seasonal Interpretive Ranger, Joe Nowotarski, proved that he is the Swiss Army knife of park rangers. There were about sixty Adventurers on his Nature at Night Hike. He handled it in a very professional manner. (Planning is already underway to be better prepared for this kind of success next year.)
We will be posting more pictures from this year’s Adventures on the Xtreme Roan Adventures website: Xtreme Roan Adventures.org If you have pictures that you would like to share send them to: Ken@XtremeRoanAdventures.org
Great Day of Adventure!
So many Adventures!
So many Adventurers!
The Saturday Adventures started at 9:00 a.m. and some of the Adventurers didn’t get off of the mountain util 6:00 p.m. That was a full day of Adventure!
Here, Rachael Lowman, a Friend of Roan Mountain member, is showing one of her bug exhibits to the Adventurers. She was the co-leader with Larry McDaniel of the Creepy Crawlies Adventure.
Rachael has also raised Monarch butterflies from eggs and has presented Monarch Programs at the Roan Mountain State Park.

Xtreme Roan Adventures only 2 weeks away!
The Xtreme Roan Adventures free Friday night Adventures is July 25 at the Roan Mountain State Park Amphitheater.
The full day of Adventure is Saturday July 26!
One of the Adventures is a hike on the Appalachian Trail to see the Baatany Goat Project on Jane Bald.
Rosalie Russo was working with the Baatany Goat Project when Baa-iley the Goat had her own Adventure. Rosalie turned that story into a book. She will be autographing copies of the Baa-iley the Goat book on Saturday at the Roan Mountain State park Conference Center just before the hike.
This is a great little children’s book. It is a true story. It is an Adventure. And you can hike up the mountian to see where it all took place.
